What are Onpage and Offpage Optimization?

SEO Techniques basically can be divided into two:

1. Onpage optimization

2. Offpage optimization

Onpage optimization:

On page optimization refers to writing original content on the websites that have keywords in the correct density, proximity and frequency so that the relevant pages are crawled by search engines, and ranked high. The keywords and keyword phrases must be correctly chosen and scattered within the text and should not be concentrated in the first few lines.

It also deals with optimizing each page with Meta tags such as title, description and keywords. Onpage optimization is not a one off thing. Keywords should be rotated on the page to find which one works best for the page and after the best results are obtained the SEO can relax a bit. But still research about keywords for the particular page should go on and shouldn’t cease.

Remember, google and search engines do not rank entire sites it ranks each page of the site individually, so if you have optimized each and every page in your site, you have nothing to worry. However, if you have optimized only your home page you are in trouble.

Offpage optimization:

Offpage optimization consists of creating backlinks on popular blogs and websites. However, Google now recognizes only one way links. That means if you have a friend and tell him, “Link to me and I will link to you,” it wouldn’t work with Google. This is a reciprocal link and Google knows what happened between you and your friend.

On the other hand if someone comes to your site and says, “Wow this is a nice site and I should write about it,” and gives you a link on his blog or site, then it is very much valid with Google as a back link. It is just like a friend recommending you for a job. If the friend says, “I will recommend you if you pay me” then it shows that there is a motive behind the recommendation.

Backlinks can also be obtained by participating in discussion boards, posting relevant comments on blogs. However backlinks should be create in sites or blogs with the same theme as your site. But care must be taken not to post 20 or 30 postings on blogs or discussion boards a day. That would send the wrong signals to search engines as it would consider this as SPAM. SPAMMING is frowned upon by google and other search engines, because it floods the net with unwanted pages and results and makes it difficult for searchers to find what they are looking for. Back links if created should be done with great caution and not more than one or two links should be created in a day.

Another way of obtaining backlinks is by submitting press releases to press release websites and submitting articles to article websites. There are many press release and article sites on the web. Some of them publish articles/press release for free and some charge a fee.

The best optimized sites are a combination of good Onpage Optimization and Offpage Optimization.
